Weston Cook joined the Washburn Rural High School band family after receiving his Bachelor of Music Education from Kansas State University in May of 2015. He was born and raised in Wichita, KS and was a 2010 graduate of Wichita Northwest High School. During his tenure at Kansas State University he was involved in many musical ensembles such as The Kansas State University Marching Band, KSU Wind Ensemble, KSU Concert Jazz Ensemble, KSU Saxophone Quartet, KSU Latin Jazz Ensemble, and the K-State University Band. He had the opportunity to perform with these ensembles in Columbia, MO; Cleveland, OH; New York City, NY; Dallas, TX; Phoenix, AZ; and San Antonio, TX. While Weston’s primary instrument is saxophone, he marched the tuba in the K-State Marching Band for three years and served as a member of the staff for his last two years. He served as a Section Leader for the tuba section in 2012. During his final year, he earned the title of Head of Student Staff for the K-State Marching Band. Weston also served as a conductor for the 2014 edition of the K-State University Band.
Weston has had a variety of teaching and professional development experiences before coming to Washburn Rural. He completed his student teaching semester at Buhler High School and the Buhler Schools. He also served as a summer staff member for the BHS band camp for two years prior to his student teaching. His experience with the Buhler High School band program was extremely valuable to his transition to becoming a certified teacher. While conducting the K-State University Band, he was required to lead daily rehearsals, which led to the culmination of the concert at the end of the semester. Weston also had the opportunity to observe and teach in the Manhattan Public Schools during his last year at K-State. His professional development experiences include attending the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the Kansas Music Educators Association Convention.
Currently, Weston Cook is the Assistant Director of Bands/Woodwinds Instructor at Washburn Rural High School. At Washburn Rural, Weston assists with the marching band, co-teaches the concert band, leads a jazz combo, conducts the pit orchestra, and teaches private lessons. In addition to his musical duties, Weston is also a part of the REACH program, which assists incoming freshmen in making the transition into high school by working on improvements in the areas of time management, organizational and test strategies, and educational and career planning. Mr. Cook also serves as the teacher of Music Explorations and Guitar class at Washburn Rural Middle School. Weston Cook is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha, Kansas Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education.
